Description:

The EKG technician course will provide you with an overview of basic cardiovascular terminology, anatomy and physiology. Focuses on the proper placement of electrocardiogram (EKG) leads and maintenance of equipment to obtain an accurate 12-Lead EKG. Learn to recognize cardiac arrhythmias. Outlines responsibilities of ECG\EKG technicians and provides clinical laboratory opportClassy to develop entry level skills. The program prepares the candidate as an EKG Technician responsible for performing diagnostic tests to access the heart rhythm and rate in patients. EKG's are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients over 40, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains and when the Doctor deems it necessary. The well trained EKG technician is an integral part of the management of patients with heart disease. The EKG Technician may also clean equipment, maintain and process data reports.

Objective:

Complete performance objectives for each course include conditions, student behaviors, and standards. In 4 exams, students will be able to state the location of the heart and its normal size; describe the relationship of the valves to heart sounds describe the rest-and-digest responses; describe the structure from which the coronary arteries arise name the three layers of the heart; define the terms polarized, depolarization and repolarization and relate them to contraction and relaxation; explain the difference between a three-channel recorder and single-channel recorder; define pacemaker; label a rhythm strip as being representative of either escape or usurpation; define arrhythmia; correctly tell how to trouble shoot artifact; define heart rate; use the five steps to correctly identify a variety of rhythms include normal sinus rhythms, atrial, ventricular flutter and fibrillation state the adverse effects for each of the sinus rhythms; state the adverse effects for each type of AV block; correctly identify artifact versus rhythm; identify the weak areas for further study within; spell and define key terms with at least 75 percent accuracy.
